While the coat care on an Airedale may seem daunting, it is well worth the effort to have such an affable companion. More relaxed than most terriers, the Airedale is a loveable clown. They are extremely smart and eager to learn, though they can have a stubborn streak. They are an excellent companion for a single woman—large and loud enough to be an intimidating watch dog, a great walking/jogging buddy, and a cuddly couch-mate.

When I kept my boy hand-stripped in order to be shown, the weekly maintenance took 2 to 3 hours. He has since been retired from the ring and transitioned to a pet groom which only takes 2 to 3 hours every 6 weeks. He gets the most sensitive areas shaved and scissored, while his back is stripped to maintain its proper texture and to keep his skin healthy.
