My cat, Topaz, is a very good cat. He is extremely obedient, and actually listens to a few commands, which is rare for a cat (in my experience.) He is very self-sufficient, and as long as he is fed on time and has access to his litter box, he requires very little attention to his grooming and upkeep. However, he craves constant attention from us, his owners. He is very loveable, but also, able to go and sleep on his own for hours on end. He also has a playful side, even though he is a larger cat. When we got him he was overweight but has since lost the pounds needed. My experience with this cat has been very positive since I wasn't sure I would like having one. We took Topaz in when a family member had to move into a No Pets Allowed apartment, and I'm not really an animal person (despite having lived with several pets over the years.) The major thing I like about this cat is that our mouse problem has completely disappeared, and he even killed a mouse for us. The negative aspect to owning this cat is he is constantly vomiting up hairballs. It's disgusting and I hate cleaning them up. Also, the litter and cat food is kind of expensive for the kind I like to get (which keeps the house from smelling like poop), so owning a cat can get 'up there' money-wise. However, the benefits of this cat far outweigh the negatives, in my opinion.
