One weekend, while helping at a near West side church in Cleveland, Ohio, I visited a local animal shelter. I was a young girl, and the site inside the kennel was not easy for me. Seeing dogs in cages and barking to be taken out and find a home hurt my heart in a huge way. I knew I could not rescue all of them.
On my way out, some folks were taking a black cat into the shelter. I asked if they were taking her in? They said, "Yes, do you want her?"
Without much thought, I said, "Yes." They handed her to me.
I had taken the bus from home to the church, so I proceeded to take the cat on the bus with me for our ride home. The bus driver never mentioned the cat.
When I arrived home, I put the cat in my bedroom. Of course my mother found the cat soon after we came home. She took care of her and never asked where I picked her up from.
Some time later, my mother commented how she felt Blackie seemed to be a very appreciative cat. I told her the story and how Blackie came to be my first rescue and why she was truly appreciative.
