Great pets but be careful with small children

We first got cats as pets when I was about six, I suppose we must have begged our parents for a cat. I might have been a bit too young to have a cat for a pet as I was sometimes a bit irresponsible with our cats. I feel particularly bad that I would drop the kittens instead of putting them down!
We started with two cats, a brother and sister, who lived both inside and outside. The female cat had two litters of kittens and we kept one of her kittens, who had two litters herself. The two older cats eventually decided to move out of our house, most likely because we got a dog who liked to chase cats, and move in with neighbors. Perhaps this is why I'm now a 'dog person' rather than a 'cat person'.
But our cats, while we had them, were great to play with, especially when we had tiny kittens running around. Even if I was a little careless with them, the cats often brought in 'gifts' from outdoors and liked to sleep on our beds. It wasn't unusual to hear a cat meowing outside our bedroom windows in the middle of the night asking to be let in.
I'd recommend cats as a family pet, but keep an eye on very young children and instruct them carefully on how to care for a cat.
