My Birman Cookie is a funny cat. She is the most shy and reserved cat I have ever owned - loves to hide/sleep in cupboards, under beds, and anywhere dark.
She is also the fluffiest cat ever. While this is beautiful (and so soft!), it means she sheds everywhere, constantly -- and furballs a LOT. Birman fur is meant to be hypoallergenic, but it still irritates my partner a little (could be worse, considering how much fluff there is).
Other than her furballs she is a very healthy cat. As with all long haired breeds (even indoor cats like mine), you should check often for fleas and matted hair, which will need to be cut out. I would recommend cat grooming (usually offered by the RSPCA or similar in your city) especially during summer.
She is NOT a lap-sitter -- and only likes being held if you cradle her in your arms like a baby. She is certainly not aggressive, just very timid, even though I love her to bits. She does love to be petted and sleeps on the bed almost ALL DAY along -- frequently for 18+ hour periods.
Therefore, other than her coat, she is a very low maintenance cat -- very clean in her litterbox, very quiet, keeps to herself, and is only playful for a few hours (in the middle of the night, of course). She almost never meows, and when she does, it's only because she's REALLY hungry.
Cookie is a very fussy eater -- will only eat certain brands of meat (but all brands of dry food). The old 'leave the food in her bowl until she eats it' trick never works -- the food will go off and start to stink long before it's eaten!
I would recommend a Birman for an older couple or family without children or other pets. The insane amount of fur they shed is worth it for a beautiful, quiet, well-behaved pet!
