As a long term cat parent, I've seldom met a cat I didn't like. That being said, the American Shorthair is something special. Beautiful, independent, friendly, and smart, Socks exemplifies the key traits of the breed. Shorthairs are known for their mild temper and sleek, attractive appearance, and they can make a great addition to the family. However, if you're looking for a lap cat this might not be the best choice. While plenty social, Socks prefers to get his attention by skillfully placing himself three to four feet in front of his humans and ignoring them until they come to him.

All in all, I've owned three American Shorthair cats and was extremely happy with each one. This breed is highly recommended for a laid-back family who doesn't expect a lot of over-the-top love from there feline companion.
