I believe there are dog persons and cat persons.
If you're looking for a faithful companion, to be always on your side, obey your commands and worship you... a cat is definitely not the right choice!
Stevie Nicks, named after one of my favorite singers, is very active during the day and only stays home from the late afternoon till the early morning after - which is ideal as my husband and I both work during the whole day. She's independent and proud, but also very sweet and likes her share of cuddles.
American Shorthair cats are healthy and active, they generally like going "hunting" (or whatever it is that they do) so it's advisable to have access to an outside space that's safe and green enough. They might also give you occasional presents like a dead bird or insects, don't reprimand them as this is a great gesture! (as if they would listen to your complaints anyway).
Stevie is good with my stepdaughter, who's 10, but I would not recommend it for younger children as they don't like to be played with or stroked too much.
In conclusion, those cats are ideal if you don't need companionship but friendship: they don't need you, so if they choose to share their life with you it's a great honor and this relationship of mutual respect is priceless.
