In my experience, shorthairs are calm an docile. My short hair could spend most of his time on his own outdoors, and came in during nights to keep warm. He was very loving and gentle, although i hav noticed that shorthairs may kneed you with their claw more often then other types of cats. These cats have soft coat, and can be groomed occasionally- i recommend grooming your short hair during the spring, as they shed most during this time. It is to be noted that the shorthair can easily get a bit overweight, and you should feed your cats twice a day, and not a free feeder.
overall, i highly recommend american shorthairs as a low effort pet who will keep you company- if at a distance.
