We’ve had our American Shorthair cat “Miss Kitty” for about one year now and although I’ve mostly owned all dogs in the past I’ve enjoyed having her in our family.
Like most cats the American Shorthair does require extra TLC since they do shed regularly and this means you should brush them at least once or twice per week to make sure that they don’t leave hair throughout your home, especially on your furniture.
Besides her grooming needs Miss Kitty has been very healthy, doesn’t require a lot of attention during the day and enjoys lounging or hanging out alone for about 8 hours per day until our kids get home from school.
Although the American Shorthair is a great cat they aren’t always in the mood to be playful so keep that in mind if you have kids like we do but we’ve found that they are generally friendly to everyone, get along well with other pets and they can live a long time especially if you brush their teeth regularly to prevent issues like periodontal disease and feed them a moderate diet so they don’t get overweight.
