The American Shorthair cat may not be as 'unique'-looking as some of its counterparts, but our cat, Snickerdoodle, has been an important and loving addition to our family for over ten years. She is playful, talkative, and a real joy to watch. We chose to keep her completely indoors and not de-claw her. So, of course, we have had to deal with some scratching over the years. She has scratched up some furniture and even a few spots of carpet, especially when she was younger. We have found that providing her with enough toys and designated cat-scratching posts helps to prevent this. If you're looking for an entirely-indoor cat, you definitely have to take into consideration that they do scratch, and might not be great for small children or anyone who might be sensitive to getting scratched or bitten.
