American Shorthair Cat - Not exactly what I expected

I've had my cat Harry for a couple of years now. He has a beautiful coat and I just love animals so having a cat is great. Around me, he is fine though he probably tends to gravitate to being more independent then wanting to hang out. He is EXTREMELY smart and always get's into things he shouldn't be.... which can be funny and annoying.

However, when he get's around other people or animals especially, I'm not sure if he gets ancy or genuinely does not like other animals being around. He has attacked people when they try to pet him and does not even let dogs come near him. It may be because I took him from a shelter after he was abandoned. If you're thinking about getting any sort of cat from a shelter I would also think about getting one from a breeder as I believe there is less of a chance they will be sporadic with their behavior.
