I got Pirate from a friend who found him on the street. Apparently, this orange tabby kitten followed him down a few blocks one evening, crying pitifully. But my friend was leaving for a new city in a few days, so he couldn't keep the kitten.
I agreed immediately to take the cat. He was adorable! An orange tabby short-hair with a perfectly crooked tail. Little did I know what I was in for. Pirate loved to cuddle, but he also had some severe destructive tendencies. Within two weeks he'd shredded my wallpaper, vomited everywhere, clawed out the panel underneath my kitchen sink just to vomit there, peed on any garment unwisely left on the floor, peed in two purses, and talked constantly about everything. He would not shut up.
He also wanted outside more than anything. I lived in a busy neighborhood just a few streets up from a major highway, so I wasn't about to let this happen.
But Pirate was stubborn. He would cry, loudly, and shake my door until the wee hours of the morning. I began to worry about my neighbors.
After three weeks of this, I was losing sleep. And I was sure my neighbors were about to call the cops; the door shaking and his voice were soul-destroyingly loud. Finally, conscious only of my need to wake up early for a presentation, I opened the door. It was one in the morning.
That next day was rough. I had all the cat things, a litter box, several toys, a cat scratcher, a cat bed...but no cat. I felt horrible. But when I neared my apartment that evening, I heard his distinctive meow.
So I have an outside cat. And no litter box! I've moved since, with a bigger yard that he adores. He mostly just sleeps outside, so, not sure what the big deal was, but whatever. He won.
