Hobie Cat

Hobie was named after a sailboat (the Hobie Cat). We lived on a lake and both Hobie and the boat she was named after lived an aquatic life. Hobie prowled freely along the lakeside, often staring into the water for long stretches of time, crouched as if at any moment she could leap into the water and ensnare whatever thing she was visually stalking from the surface. She never did jump in, but sometimes I would spend evenings fishing from the lake wall at sunset, she wound between my ankles purring and meowing with delight as she waited, literally salivating, for my line to reel in a bluegill or guppy for her to eat. At these moments, Hobie was perhaps the happiest creature on earth. Every other time of the day, she couldn't be bothered. Always distant. I think she had emotional problems. But evenings fishing with her are some of my fondest memories. Hobie lived to an old age of 15.
