I'm not a cat person, but let me just say - I love this cat. He is perfect for me because he is very loving, but at the same time, he disappears for hours at a time and isn't constantly in my business. (Which is great, because I'm also allergic to him.) During the day, if he comes up to me and I am too busy for him, I just pat his head or nudge his bottom and tell him to go away and he does - and he doesn't hold a grudge. He just comes back a few hours later to see if I'm available yet. We usually curl up together at the end of the day after the kids have gone to bed, and watch TV together or nap. I like to bring him into my room at night so he can sleep with me. I wake up with red, puffy eyes from the allergies, but it's worth it because he's so nice and cuddly.

The only thing I would change about this cat is that he does NOT get along with my dogs. He hates them. Actually, he despises the very concept of them. If he's in a room and a dog walks by, he will go out of his way to hiss and bat at the dog. I don't know if that's specific to this breed, because this isn't the only American shorthair I own or have owned, and none of the others have displayed such aggression toward dogs. (He's a rescue, too, so he might have had a bad experience with dogs before we got him.)

Pros:
Snuggly, but not smothering
Independent, but not aloof
Nice to people and other cats
Good size - not huge and not tiny (don't feel like I'm going to break him)
I love that he gives "kisses" like a dog with his little rough tongue

Cons:
Not good with dogs
Not great with kids (tolerates them, stays out of their way, but doesn't like them to touch him)
Plain appearance
Talks constantly - he chirps every time he enters a room or jumps down from furniture
Sheds quite a bit
Allergy-inducing
