Minette came to me because her previous owners were planning to abandon her in a warehouse. They told me that she wasn't affectionate and that she would "hate you like she hates everyone else."
As it turned out, she did hate everyone else, but she was very affectionate with me. She was, however, hyper-aggressive with adults who were not me. I came to have some concerns about her prior owners, because this cat was very defensive of things that she didn't think could defend themselves - such as infants. She would defend infants from their mothers, or dogs from their owners. (She never hurt a child or dog, though.)
She also tended to guard things that she thought were mine, like the refrigerator or the bathroom. This required some patience on my part when I had guests over, especially when she was new to my house. She was a small cat, but she was sharp and she was smart. Ultimately, we wound up having to put her in a downstairs room if we were having guests over that she didn't already know.
It's worth considering your cat's personality before bringing them home; Minette took some getting used to before we fully adjusted and she was still a handful right up until the day she passed away. For me, this was acceptable. We were close, she was very affectionate with me, and she had nowhere else to go. I think that other families would have had a harder time with her.
