When I got a call from my local shelter asking if I could provide a foster home for an anxious arrival, I said sure, as long as it's only a few weeks. Weeks turned into months, months into years, and now Calamity is a permanent member of my family, for better or for worse. It took me almost two months for her to become comfortable and open to petting, and another six months for her to use the litterbox correctly when she was left alone. I still don't like to leave her alone for extended periods of time; she's easily stressed out, and when she's stressed, she stops grooming herself. But, at the end of the day, she's a sweet cat who didn't ask to be abandoned, and now she's mine.
