Best Cat I Ever Owned

American Shorthairs are generally pretty easy to own and maintain. They groom themselves and are independent enough to leave on their own. I recommend spaying or neutering though.

Shadrach was a rescue, and as loving as he was loyal. He was clever, too. I was able to teach him to sit and he taught himself how to open the door to my bedroom by using the hamper to reach the door knob (much to my shock).

The only con I had him was clawing. He tore up two couches in the time that I owned him and buying him a scratching post only seemed to encourage the behavior. I ended up buying new couches and a squirt gun, and he lost interest after being spritzed a few times.

If you are a first time cat owner or are looking for a good pet that is relatively low maintenance, an American Shorthair is a good breed.
