My American Shorthair was a rescued animal and survivor of five years abuse and neglect from a previous owner. Despite the damage, he was very sturdy, athletic, and quickly warmed to new people. In my experience, many individuals with serious cat allergies experienced little to no discomfort in his presence. The American Shorthair is an excellent breed to cuddle with, plays well with very small children, and has a low propensity to biting or scratching.

Prospective owners should be advised, however, that this is a large, stocky breed with significant food and water demands, and will likely require more frequent litter box cleaning than most breeds.
