Acquired: Rescue / shelter organization

When my husband and I first moved in together, we had a dog, but I really wanted a cat. We went to pick one from the local animal shelter for my birthday. We walked into the cat room, and this chunky black cat immediately came up to me and started nuzzling. We spent about an hour in the cat room, but I knew that he was the one. He'd been surrendered to the shelter when his previous owner passed away. The shelter owners said that black cats are the least likely to get adopted because people are superstitious. After ten years, he's brought us no bad luck...that I'm aware of. :) Oberon is a fat cat, and we lovingly call him "Jabba." He's so very sweet, but often hungry, and very vocal when he wants to be fed. We were told he had to compete pretty hard for food in the shelter. Other than being heavy, he's in great health and he gets along with my children (who pull on his fur), and all other animals. He's very calm, patient, and loves to snuggle when I read. He's about 14 now, and I know our time with him is limited, but I doubt we'll ever be able to replace him.
