In my opinion, cats make perfect starter pets. They are a wonderful combination of affectionate and independent. Depending on your particular cat, it can be quite easy to live a normal, active lifestyle away from your home and still have a content kitty. Cats do vary a lot in their behavior and traits. Some cats can be much more friendly than others. And while some cats are light eaters, others could eat for hours on end.
We have had my cat, Joseph, for over 13 years. He has lived with a great variety of animals including reptiles, fish, dogs, and livestock and we've never had any problems with him. He is absolutely a part of the family.
Now, I say that they are great starter pets, and this is generally true. If you are seeking companionship without a ton of extra daily responsibilities, cats can be great! However, cats live a very long time. Sometimes even close to 20 years, so it is still a major life choice to adopt or buy a cat.
