My first experience with cats, was a newly born kitten that I found on the street. After we took her to the vet He said it was an American short-hair cat. She was a long time with us, and after 1 month was sterilized to avoid having more kittens, even though it is somewhat responsible, male cats smelled her like another male and always fought with her. Because she always went out by the trees near my house. Until one day she return no more. The maintenance cost is average, like other cats she did not like to have showers but we were doing it every two weeks.

Arabians actually make great youth horses! :) I understand you had a less than desirable experience in your family, but not all horses make good children's horses, no matter the breed. I hope you are able to have a better experience with an Arabian in the future! :)
