American short hairs can hardly be lumped into just one category, nor personality. My cat, Ozzy, is wonderful with kids, loving with the family and even tolerant of my Basset Hounds. My sister-in-law owns two American Short Hairs who, on the other hand, are anything but friendly. Just like people, these cats vary in temperments, no two cats are the same.
I love Ozzy - even when he screams through the house at 3am, meowing an eerie Siamese yell that wakes EVERYONE up. He loves to cuddle, finds my lap the most comfortable around and puts up with my 10 month old daughter pawing him with curiosity.
