American Shorthairs can make great companions for the elderly -- they are low maintenance, don't cost much to own, and have low activity...they don't want for much, they are happy to laze about. Thus, they may prove "boring" for kids and anyone who wants an active and playful pet (though these cats can be very playful as kittens, they generally grow out of this). My cat Dorothy is a placid and pleasant pet; I've had her for almost 14 years now...she is a loyal companion.
