Pluses:

The two American Shorthair cats which I've owned have had gentle demeanors, clean themselves and need little grooming, and have been loving kitties once they get to know me.

Minuses:

American Shorthairs can be wary of new surroundings, so it can take a couple of days for them to warm up to their owners. I've experienced that this breed can gorge itself on food, and then need to vomit. Unlike humans, cats do not run to a discreet area to vomit, either. I recently had to remove cat vomit from my living room floor.
