I "inherited" Sparkie the American Shorthair from my mom when she passed away, but I have known her since she was just a few weeks old. My mom rescued Sparkie and her littermates and kept Sparkie. I have now had her for four years. She is adorable and very loving - she loves to cuddle. Since she is short haired she is easy to groom - she loves to be brushed. She is a bit shy and always has been slightlly afraid of strangers. She purrs beautifully and meows only when she is hungry or to greet me. She has never been the least bit destructive. She is very playful. She has had health issues, though. She has been suffering bouts of constipation for about 6 years, though I have found a combination of herbs that work beautifully and have made the numerous trips to the vet a thing of the past. She suffers from asthma, too. She requires two medications and sometimes still has coughing spells. Not sure if this is a breed issue or just unique to her. I can't think of a more loving and calm cat and love her dearly.
