Over the years I've owned plenty of cats, many of them delivering kittens in the base of my closet. My favorite was an American Shorthair with dark print named Dakota. He was my best friend and greatest of my cat loves. If you're looking to add one of these beautiful felines to your family, I would definitely recommend them.

Never destructive (save for the mice he would catch), Dakota and the rest of our shorthairs, were love bugs. Depending on their personality, some can be talkers, but some won't be. I have experienced them being friendly lovers, and I have also experienced some that are rather independent.. it's generally a toss up as to which personality your cat will inherit.

As for maintenance and care, there really isn't much. Keep them up to date with their shots, comb their hair (they will shed in summer, too), give them a scratching post, and they'll be happy.

I highly recommend to those looking for a feline pal.
