Species group: Geckos
Other common names: Eyelash Leaf Tailed Gecko; Fantastic Leaf Tailed Gecko
Scientific name: Uroplatus phantasticus
The Satanic Leaf Tailed Gecko is one of nine species of Leaf Tailed Geckos, Uroplatus. These geckos are native to the island of Madagascar. It is an arboreal species which uses its incredible natural camouflage to hide amongst leaves and leaf litter.
Appearance / health:
The adult size of the Satanic Leaf Tailed Gecko ranges from 2.5 - 6 inches total length. The gecko occurs in a variety of colors, ranging through various hues of purple, orange, tan and yellow.
Uroplatus phantasticus is uncommon in captivity and often kept in breeding pairs or trios. Males can be housed together as intraspecific aggression tends to be low when captive conditions are sufficient. Still, occasional male-male aggression can become evident.
They eat a variety of appropriately sized insects including crickets and moths.
If breeding is successful in captivity, eggs will be laid at intervals of approximately 30 days and take approximately 90 days to hatch, although incubation time of up to 120 days have been noted by breeders.

Bizarre but not Really "Satanic"!
Few lizards match the extreme lengths to which these Madagascan natives have taken camouflage. During my years as a zookeeper, I often had trouble finding them even in relatively small exhibits! Their bizarre appearance sometimes prompts “impulse purchases”, which is a bad idea, but the experienced, prepared hobbyist can ask for no more interesting a creature.
Shy and completely arboreal, leaf-tails should be kept in terrariums which are vertically oriented and well-stocked with vines, cork bark rolls and sturdy plants. They are nocturnal, and so if provided a healthful diet do fine without UVB exposure. Red reptile night-viewing bulbs will allow you to watch your pets after dark (they sense little if any of the light produced by these bulbs), and can also be used to supply an ambient temperature of 72-78 F. Humidity must be kept high – to 75-80% - but the tank should be allowed to dry out by day. Moist coco-husk and sphagnum moss and, in dry homes, a reptile humidifier, will assist in maintaining the conditions they favor.
A wide variety of insects supplemented with powdered calcium and vitamins are essential to your gecko’s well-being. Roaches are a particular favorite, and a steady supply should be in place before you purchase a Satanic leaf-tail. Snails form a good portion of the natural diet, and most zoos and advanced keepers breed small terrestrial or aquatic species as a food source and to supply much-needed calcium to gravid females. Crickets, silkworms, hornworms, locusts and other commercially-available insects should also be supplied; crickets and mealworms alone, even if supplemented, will not maintain their health long-term..

Satanic Leaf Tail Gecko - Beautifully Impossible to Keep
Satanic Leaf Tail Geckos are beautiful geckos and are probably one of the coolest animals you will ever own! Watching them hunt at night, jumping from limb to limb chasing crickets will be something that you never forget!
However, getting these delicate geckos to thrive will bring you to your breaking point. Unfortunately, 99 percent of the Satanic Leaf Tail geckos you see for sale are caught in the forests of Madagascar and shipped to your local distributor. Then from that distributor they are shipped to a reseller. Then, you finally are able to obtain your awesome gecko! The stress from this constant shipping alone will kill most of them before even getting to you.
Acclimating them to captivity is a feat that I would only advise an expert reptile keeper to take on. It is entirely possible to get them thriving, and once they are you can more than likely have 2-3 years of them amazing you nightly!.
