The Speckledy Chicken is a hybrid that was created by one of the UK’s largest free range egg producers, Stonegate, in 1992. It was developed by crossing together Rhode Island Reds and Cuckoo Marans. Birds mature early, and lay dark, shiny eggs.

Personality: Calm, makes a fine backyard layer and pet
Preferred climate: Any
Handles confinement: Yes
Egg production: Very Good (4/week)
Egg color: Dark Brown
Egg size: Jumbo
What else you should know:
Hens are very productive, and can be prone to egg binding. To prevent egg binding make sure your hens are getting enough calcium and exercise. Like many egg production hybrids, the Speckledy hen can have a shorter lifespan.
Enola is a boisterous hen and always has been. Never worried about making a noise, she's better than a watch dog and squawks frantically at trouble. She loves to be petted and stroked, and will put up her shoulders when someone walks by. She has also learned how to knock on the door with her beak, and when that doesn't work, she meows like the cats to get us to open the door and look outside. She chatters away to the other hens all day long and is a charming bird. Definitely a family hen! She did lay eggs fairly regularly, but as she has got older has stopped laying. Consider if you want your hens to produce lots of eggs, as their age is a huge factor. All of our flock are hens who were in need of rescue or re-homing, and Enola has taken to her new home brilliantly, foraging perfectly well by herself and is happy and healthy. We've never had any health problems, indeed, she has never even gone through a moult. She's certainly a hardy chicken and I would recommend this breed to anyone who keeps their poultry as pets..
