The Robusta Lionata originated in 1965, by Rovigo city’s Experimental Poultry Station. The breed was developed by crossing the English Buff Orpington and popular commercial hybrid of Italy, that was known as the White America.
The breed is considered very rare, with a 2007 study estimating only 700 breeding fowl left in existence.
