The Ermellinate di Rovigo was developed at the Experimental Poultry Station, in Rovigo city. It was created around 1959, by crossing the Sussex and Rhode Island Red. The breed was developed to be a dual-purpose fowl, in which the hens could be used to create auto-sexing hybrids.
