The Black Shumen is a century old chicken from Shumen, Bulgaria. Around the 1950’s, the breed was crossed with black Minorcas and Rhode Island Reds. This was done to improve the breeds egg productivity.

Black Shumen Chicken
Black Shumen chicken are said to be from Bulgaria. I keep this breed because to be honest, their meat is sweater than the conventional laboratory manufactured chicken. Interestingly, they have less fats because they are more mobile and expend a lot of Energy.
In an age where cholesterol is becoming an issue, I think they are a perfect replacement for common meat. I also found out that they are less susceptible to common ailment that befall poultry animals..
