Scientific name: Gasteracantha cancriformis
The Spiny Orbweaver Spider is a small spider which is native to the southern region of the United States, from California to Florida, as well as to Central and South America.
I kept crab spiders in my room when I was a kid. They are pretty small and look (duh) like a crab. They were out in the woods where I lived.
Here is why my Mom let me keep them in my room. In our house, as in most houses, there were tiny house spiders in every room.... except mine. The crab spiders I kept would go around the complete perimeter of the room and eat all the little house spiders. Then they would chose a corner and build this beautiful web. When they made an egg sack and died, the big beautiful web was easier to clean away than the constant little web trails the house spiders left in other rooms..
