Other common names: Superworms, Kingworms, Zophobas
Scientific name: Zophobas morio
The larvae of the Darkling Beetle are known by the common name of "Super Worms". Darkling Beetle larvae resemble large Mealworms. Super Worms are popular in the pet trade as a food for feeding reptiles, birds and as fishing bait.
These I keep for feeding purposes, and seem to live much longer than mealworms. As long as you keep them in the fridge, that is. The thing I don't like about them when feeding my Ts is that they burrow into the substrate instantly, which is a huge pain if your T likes to take its time and wait for some privacy before feeding. They are also only good for adult or larger species of Tarantulas. I tend to keep some of these as well as some mealworms in stock for feeding as they have their ups and downs and are better for some Ts than others. I personally have never tried breeding them, and haven't found much information on trying to do so, so if you are looking for a feeder that you don't have to go purchase every time, this isn't the feeder for you. .
