Is the Entlebucher Mountain Dog right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Entelbuch Mountain Dog; Entlebucher Cattle Dog; Entlebucher Sennehound; Entlebucher; Entle

The basics:
The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is the smallest of the four Swiss Mountain dog breeds. The others are the Appenzeller Sennenhunde, Bernese Mountain Dog, and the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. Alpine dairymen developed the Entlebucher Mountain Dogs to bring back cows back from their mountain pastures. Like many other herding dogs, they needed to be hardy and intelligent, with the ability to solve problems and think for themselves. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the breed in 2011, singling them out as a herding dog that's smart and eager to work without being aggressive.

However, as with any herding breed, you must be prepared to provide plenty of exercise and interesting activities. A bored Entlebucher Mountain Dog could be destructive.

Appearance / health:
The head is wedge-shaped. They have a flat skull with a straight, strong well-formed muzzle. The small, dark brown eyes are medium-sized and triangular in shape. The rounded ears are set high and hang against the cheeks. The body is long and appears slightly elongated.

They are average shedders requiring minimal grooming. Bathing and shampooing is done occasionally.

Entlebuchers are busy dogs who require plenty of exercise. Walking, swimming, jogging, sprinting keep them healthy and happy.

Entlebuchers may suffer from inherited eye diseases that cause blindness in some dogs. Hip dysplasia, a disorder characterized by abnormal hip formation, is found in some Entlebuchers.

Behavior / temperament:
Entlebuchers have strong protective instincts and make good watchdogs. These hyperactive dogs need a job to do and are capable of working hard to please their masters. When kept alone for long, they can develop problems. They are happiest with their families with adequate amounts of love and attention. Entlebuchers are playful dogs who like to play rough, nipping and hurling themselves at their playmates. Their herding instincts are strong.

They have a high learning rate. Entlebuchers are intelligent dogs who require early training. Consistent and firm training is necessary for these dogs. Socialization and obedience, when introduced early, helps Entlebuchers easily adjust to their surroundings and people. They enjoy obedience training, and love to please their owners.

Entlebucher Sennenhund can be VERY noisy if not trained properly. But with the right training it is not a big issue. They bark to greet their owners or alert them to any stranger in their territory. However, their bark is loud for their size. They do not howl much.
