Species group: Mixed Breeds
Other name(s): Chiweenie
The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The Chiweenie, a cross between the Chihuahua and the Dachshund, is a so-called designer dog meant to appeal to our human eyes. Be aware that there is considerable variation in what you get with a mixed breed, so get to know the animal and the breeder before you make your final choice.
Appearance / health:
All cross-bred dogs are individuals, but Chiweenies tend to be small, big-eared, big-eyed cuties.
Know your breeder. Small dogs bred to be smaller and smaller by irresponsible puppy mill breeders can have serious health problems.
Behavior / temperament:
While the Chiweenie can certainly be a charmer, an irresponsible puppy mill breeder could be producing inbred lines selected simply to look cute, without any regard for whether or not the dogs have toilet training issues. If you're adopting a rescue, take the time to learn about the dog's issues first.
