Is the Cirneco Dell'Etna right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Sicilian Greyhound

The basics:
Although it was only recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 2015, the Cirneco dell'Etna (pronounced as cheer-nay-ko) may date back at least 3,000 years. This primitive sighthound from Sicily was developed to hunt rabbits in the region around the volcanic Mount Etna. You will notice some similarities to the Greyhound-- including an ability to sprint after prey and then chill with family on the couch (or under a quilt) for hours.

Appearance / health:
The Cirneco Dell'Etna is a medium-sized, lean, and muscular dog with characteristic ears and an elegant body. The ears are large, triangular, always erect, and set very high on the head. The neck is long, slender, and muscular. The head is rather small in comparison to the body and has a long and tapering muzzle. The eyes are small and almond-shaped. The tail is long, quite thick, set low and lifted in a trumpet like posture over the back, when the dog is alert.

The Cirneco requires minimal grooming in the form of regular brushing. The long ears require regular cleaning.

The Cirneco requires regular exercise to stay fit. Owners may take their dogs for long walks and jogs.

The Cirneco Dell'Etna is known to be an extremely healthy breed free from most inherited diseases.

Behavior / temperament:
The Cirneco is a primitive dog breed that enjoys human company and is happy being with its family members. With its strong smelling and hunting instincts, the breed specializes in rabbit hunting and other small game hunting. Capable of maintaining absolute silence, the Cirneco can sneak up on any feathered game as well.

The Cirneco responds best to firm, consistent training that is started from an early age.

The breed is not very noisy by nature.
