Is the Chow Chow Mix right for you?

Species group:

The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.

All mixed breeds are individuals but if you have a dog that appears to be mostly Chow Chow, it's useful to take a look at the likely traits it will inherit from that breed. The ancient Chow Chow probably dates back more than 3,000 years and may be one of the first recognizable dog breeds to emerge from the wolf. To this day, they seem to have a different personality from other breeds-- aloof, somewhat serious, demanding careful training so that they don't become one-person dogs. If they aren't socialized early, their aggression and territoriality could result in a problem animal. This breed is probably best left for the experienced dog owner who can calmly and patiently establish dominance without offending the Chow's dignity.

Appearance / health:
All mixed-breed dogs can have a varying appearance, depending on what traits they inherit, but in general with the mostly Chow Chow mix you can expect a stocky dog with a lion-like mane or ruff.

Behavior / temperament:
It's impossible to predict the exact temperamental traits inherited by a mixed-breed dog. However, as a general rule, with the Chow Chow mix, you should be aware that some people find Chow Chows difficult to control. This may be a mix best left to experienced dog owners. Chow Chows are quite different from other breeds, displaying a set of behaviors similar to a cat. They are as reserved and intelligent as cats, and they may not always enjoy cuddling by children or strangers. Some Chow Chows may be extremely aggressive or timid, so you need to provide the proper training and socialization whether the dog agrees that it needs training or not.
