Species group: Mixed Breeds
The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The pairing between a Chihuahua and a Basenji isn't all that common, but you may occasionally encounter this mix in a rescue.
Appearance / health:
It's impossible to predict the exact traits inherited by a mixed-breed dog. In this case, the appearance of your pet could be very different depending on whether the Chihuahua or the Basenji traits dominate.
Behavior / temperament:
While it's impossible to predict the exact personality of any mixed-breed dog, the Chihuahua / Basenji Mix is potentially a light, agile dog that will be able to get up and over places you'd never expect-- and, if it inherits the Basenji prey drive, it could be highly motivated to chase and leap. The idea of getting a voiceless version of the Chihuahua is tempting, but this is never guaranteed.
