Is the Cesky Fousek right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Bohemian Wire-haired Pointing Griffon; Rough-coated Bohemian Pointer; Barbu tchèque

The basics:
An older breed from the Bohemian region of the present-day Czech Republic, the Cesky Fousek was developed to be a tenacious and versatile hunting dog that became so well-respected it was patronized by a 14th century Bohemian king. Like many European breeds, it was close to extinction in the aftermath of two World Wars, but it is now being revived and attracting attention from modern hunters. They are still tough to find, but those owners who succeed say that this breed is superb in pursuit of both upland game birds and waterfowl. They are not a breed that will be happy with a sedentary lifestyle.

Appearance / health:
The head is thin and long. The eyes are dark amber or chestnut in color. The ears are broad at base, pendant, and narrowing to point. The medium-sized muzzle is longer than the skull. They have deep chests with well-sprung ribs. The back is short and muscular. The forelegs are strong and straight. The hind legs are muscular, with well bent stifles. Males run noticeably larger than females.

The Cesky Fousek requires little grooming. Brushing regularly with a firm bristle brush removes any dead hair. Bathing and shampooing is done when required.

They require moderate to high amounts of exercise. A daily long walk or a jog is necessary to keep them happy. In addition, they may get their exercise in a midsized fenced yard or during picnics, treks, trips to the beach, etc.

Baldness occurs often in Cesky Fouseks. Hip dysplasia (a condition marked by abnormal hips) is rare but may occur.

Behavior / temperament:
The Cesky Fousek is a versatile dog who works with great enthusiasm in field, forest, or water. These dogs have strong hunting instincts and a keen sense of smell. They can easily cover vast areas of land or search patiently in bushes to retrieve a bird. They are natural guard dogs who police their neighborhood with dedication. They are happiest when they hunt. At home, they are not very active. Without sufficient mental and physical stimulation, these dogs may tend toward boredom and can indulge in destructive behavior.

The learning rate for these dogs is high. They are easy to train. Hunting comes naturally to them, and they thrive on working with their human companion. Early socialization and obedience training can work wonders with this breed.

They are spirited barkers.
