Is the Catalan Sheepdog right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Gos D'Atura; Perro De Pastor Catalan; Gos D’Atura Catala; Catalonian Shepherd

The basics:
The Catalan Sheepdog (Gos D'Atura) is an ancient breed developed to herd and guard sheep, although its popularity slid during the 20th century with the mass migration from the country to the city. Like other typical sheepdogs, it is intelligent and capable of solving problems, making this breed a choice for the active, outdoorsy family that is prepared to give the dog something worthwhile and interesting to do. You should have some experience in training and socializing an animal based on positive reinforcement. If you are easily intimidated by a large dog, this breed could walk right over you.

Appearance / health:
The Catalan Sheepdog is a massive, strong, and hairy dog with a large head and a short muzzle. The long hair covers almost the entire body except for the eyes and the muzzle. The eyes are round. The ears are triangular, set high and drooping. The length of the body is slightly more than its height. The tail is either long or short, richly covered with hair and set low.

The Catalan Sheepdog sheds seasonally in two stages. First, it affects the front part of the body, and then the back half of the body. The breed requires daily brushings. Regular grooming is necessary to keep the coat in good condition.

Catalan Sheepdogs require moderate amounts of exercise to stay fit. Long walks are suitable for this breed.

The Catalan Sheepdog is generally a very healthy breed. However, the breed may be prone to hip dysplasia (inherited disease in which hip joints are dislocated causing limpness or crippling).

Behavior / temperament:
The Catalan Sheepdog is a thinking animal inclined to make decisions on its own. However, its independent nature requires a mature and experienced owner with a good understanding of the breed and sufficient time for training, exercise, and socialization. It is wary of strangers, and makes a great watchdog and guard dog.

Catalan Sheepdogs are known for their great intelligence. Early obedience training is necessary for this breed. Some dogs of this breed may be obstinate and difficult to train. However, patient, consistent training using positive methods of reinforcement can work wonders. Early socialization with different people and situations is extremely important to help the dog adjust to its surroundings.

They are not very noisy.
