Is the Cantel right for you?

Species group:

The basics:
The Cantel is (or was) a new, unrecognized so-called designer dog created by Phyllis Disque of Shiloh Kennels, in Iowa, in 1995. She crossed Bichons Frises with colored and parti-colored Toy Poodles to produce parti-colored dogs having Bichon qualities. Mrs. Disque named and trademarked the breed "Cantel" because, in her own words, "You can’t tell if it’s a Bichon, and you can’t tell if it’s a Poodle!” At one time, the breed could be registered with the Cantel Club of America, but it isn't clear if the club survives or if the mix is still being produced.

Appearance / health:
The Cantel is a small breed that makes a fine lapdog.

The Cantel is said to be hypo-allergenic. It sheds little hair. Daily brushing, along with an occasional bath, may be required to keep its coat in good condition. The eyes may need to be wiped regularly.

The Cantel requires little exercise. Daily short walks, along with a romp in a fenced yard, should suffice for this breed.

There are no known health issues specific to this breed.

Behavior / temperament:
Cantels are sensitive, and quite affectionate toward strangers. They are spirited dogs that are happy to accompany their owners to work.
Cantels will respond to gentle, sensitive training methods.

Cantels are generally not known to be noisy.
