Is the Bull Arab right for you?

Species group:

Other name(s): Aussie Pig Dog

The basics:
The Bull Arab was developed in 1970s Australia for the hunting of feral pigs from a cross-breeding of Bull Terriers, Greyhounds, German Shorthaired Pointers, and perhaps a few others. The dog was trained not to kill the prey, but to catch it by the ear and pull it to the ground. In time, some hunters also trained it to pursue feral cattle and buffalo. Unfortunately, there have been reports that this breed will also attempt to take down human passersby that spark their prey drive. They can only be recommended to responsible owners who know how to properly manage and socialize powerful breeds.

Appearance / health:
As a breed under development, they can be surprisingly diverse. Expect a lean, muscular animal.

Behavior / temperament:
The mix of breeds in the Bull Arab make-up means that this dog's temperament may not be entirely predictable. Be an expert, intuitive dog owner who knows how to be a consistent alpha who gets respect and affection from the animal. A poorly trained animal could be a legal or an insurance liability, especially in Australia, where owners can be prosecuted for dog attacks.
