Is the Boykin Spaniel right for you?

Species group:

The basics:
According to the Boykin Spaniel Society, "The Boykin Spaniel was first bred by South Carolina hunters during the 1900's to provide the ideal dog for hunting ducks and wild turkeys in the Wateree River Swamp. Hunters on South Carolina's Wateree River needed a small rugged dog compactly built for boat travel and able to retrieve on land and water."

Today, the Boykin Spaniel is used as a family dog as well as a hardy retriever of upland birds and waterfowl. The state of South Carolina has designated the Boykin Spaniel its official state dog, and the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Association's (AKC) in 2009. The AKC is enthusiastic about the pet qualities of ths fine hunting breed, singling it out as exceptionally friendly and eager-to-train.

Appearance / health:
The Boykin Spaniel is a medium-sized dog with a spaniel-type head. Larger than the Cocker Spaniel, the breed has smaller ears that are set high on the head.

This breed requires brushing every few days to avoid coat matting.

Vigorous play sessions and regular daily walks may help to keep these working dogs fit and happy.

The most common health issues are hip dysplasia, eye problems, and a few lines have heart and skin problems.

Behavior / temperament:
Their enthusiasm and sense of smell in the field make them a versatile hunter, which may make them difficult to recall.

The Boykin Spaniel has a strong working drive combined with their eagerness to please. Positive training methods with a lot of variety can keep these dogs engaged. Socialization and basic manners training should begin early in the dog's life. These dogs can be trained in pet therapy, search and rescue, field work, Frisbee catching, DockDogs, DogScouts, and agility training.

The Boykin is an average barker.
