Species group: Mixed Breeds
Other name(s): Golden Boxer
The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The first generation Golden Boxer is a cross between a pure Golden Retriever and a pure Boxer, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. This so-called designer hybrid is intended to create a large, friendly family animal with some protective qualities-- an attempt to get the best of two popular breeds.
Appearance / health:
All mixed-breed dogs can vary in appearance, and Golden Boxers from the same litter can look completely different, with some puppies taking after the Boxer parent and others favoring the Golden. Expect a large, athletic animal. The name is misleading, since not all dogs will be gold.
Behavior / temperament:
While it's always difficult to predict the exact personality of a mixed-breed dog, the Golden Boxer is likely to be an energetic animal that loves being with its family. There's no way to tell in advance if you're getting a super-friendly animal that can go to anyone or more of a family-first protector. If you need a guardian animal, you should consider the purebred Boxer instead.
