Species group: Mixed Breeds
The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The cross between two of the world's top working breeds, the German Shepherd Dog and the Border Collie, can be a superb companion or service animal for the owner who knows how to channel the dog's high intelligence and energy. However, this mix is unlikely to be the best choice for somebody who just wants to kick back on the couch.
Appearance / health:
All mixed-breed dogs can vary in appearance, but many owners have reported that their dogs tend to look more like the GSD side of the family-- strong, muscular, with the black and tan saddle pattern. Sometimes the only hint of the Border Collie DNA comes from the ears.
Behavior / temperament:
It's impossible to predict the exact traits inherited by a mixed-breed dog. Both the Border Collie and the GSD bring loyalty, intelligence, and high energy. But you should know how to properly train and socialize a large dog that may have a powerful drive to protect.
