Species group: Mixed Breeds
Other name(s): Bich-poo, Poochon, Bichpoo, Bichon Poodle
The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The first generation Bichon Frise/Poodle is a cross between a pure Bichon Frise and a pure Poodle, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. This designer dog is one of the more popular intentional mixes, because it combines the intelligence of the Poodle with the "cute" of the Bichon Frise-- making for an irresistible package, especially in the Miniature Poodle size.
Appearance / health:
The appearance of the Bichpoo is somewhat variable, depending on the proportions of Bichon Frise and the size/proportions of the Poodle in the mix. You may not know exactly what you're going to get, but you're pretty much guaranteed that the result will be adorable.
Behavior / temperament:
The personality of all mixed breeds dog is somewhat unpredictable, but a lot of owners adore this lovable mix for a family pet. Poodles are sensitive, highly intelligent, and intuitive, and you want to provide lots of loving guidance to make sure that "sensitive" doesn't become "spoiled" or "neurotic."
