Species group: Mixed Breeds
Other name(s): Golden Mountain Dog
The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The first generation Golden Mountain Dog is a cross between a pure Bernese Mountain Dog and a pure Golden Retriever, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. This so-called designer hybrid is intended to create a large but friendly family pet.
Appearance / health:
It's impossible to predict the exact traits inherited by a mixed-breed dog, but the Golden Mountain Dog can be a true gentle giant weighing as much as 120 pounds.
Behavior / temperament:
While it's always difficult to predict the exact personality of a mixed-breed dog, most owners report that the Golden Mountain Dog can be a truly lovable family companion. Their size may tempt you to use them as guard dogs-- but some people say they are too friendly to be serious protection animals.
