Species group: Unrecognized and Rare Breed dogs
Other name(s): Österreichische Glatthaarige; Austrian Brandlbracke; Bracke; Austrian Smooth-haired Hound; Brandlbra
The basics:
The rare Austrian Black and Tan Hound is appreciated within its home country, Austria, as a powerful scenthound able to tirelessly track wounded hares and fox over high altitude terrain. This energetic dog loves working in the outdoors and isn't suited to apartment living.
Appearance / health:
The Austrian Black and Tan Hound is a medium-sized dog with a strong, long, flexible body. The nose is leather black. The neck is strong and the chest is broad. The long tail is slightly bent with coarse hair on the underside. The ears are long and fall down. They should be black with the appropriate fawn or tan markings.
These dogs need regular brushing with a firm bristle brush to remove any unwanted hair.
They require a lot of exercise to keep them busy and happy. A long walk or jog may be necessary.
There are no known health issues affecting Austrian Black and Tan Hounds. However, as is the case with several large dogs, they may be prone to hip dysplasia, a condition marked by poorly developed hips that causes lameness. Certain substances may also trigger an allergic reaction in them.
Behavior / temperament:
They are excellent runners and possess a sensitive nose, which they use often when hunting and tracking. This may also cause problems for the owner to recall them as an attractive scent may distract them. These dogs point to their prey by "giving tongue" or baying. Their movement is swift and agile.
Austrian Black and Tan Hounds have a good learning rate.
They can be noisy, as some of them tend to bark a lot.
