Species group: Mixed Breeds
The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The first generation Australian Shepherd / Chow-Chow mix is a cross between a pure Australian Shepherd and a pure Chow-chow, although subsequent generations may have different proportions of the two breeds in the mix. With any mixed breed, you can never be sure of what you're getting, but this combination can produce some genuinely challenging dogs. Have experience socializing animals that demand a consistent alpha like the Chow-chow, as well as highly athletic and energetic dogs like the Aussie. If it's a rescue, get to know the dog first and know yourself. This is not a mix for every owner.
Appearance / health:
While all mixed-breed dogs can vary in appearance, the Australian Shepherd / Chow-chow is going to be large enough and willful enough to cause problems if you're not good with larger dogs.
Behavior / temperament:
While it's always impossible to fully predict the exact traits inherited by a mixed-breed dog, some of these dogs are challenging, headstrong, and determined to destroy your home if you don't crate them or provide them with enough time and space to exercise.
