Species group: Mixed Breeds
The basics:
RightPet does not advocate the intentional cross-breeding of purebred dogs. But the reality is that most dogs available for adoption at shelters and rescues are mixed breeds. We think it might be helpful to hear from owners of these mixes to see what traits can be found in these dogs who are desperately needing homes.
The pairing between an Australian Shepherd and a Chihuahua isn't all that common, especially since most registries would like to discourage the breeding of merle Chihuahuas, but you may occasionally encounter this mix in a rescue. There are rumors that some so-called merle Chihuahuas are actually this mix with falsified paperwork. Know your breeder or rescue.
Appearance / health:
Know your breeder, or at least meet the dog if it's a rescue. It may resemble a larger-than-average merle Chihuahua, and it may have some of the genetic problems associated with the gene for merle color in Chihuahuas.
Behavior / temperament:
While it's impossible to predict the exact personality of a mixed-breed dog, the Australian Shepherd / Chihuahua Mix is intended to be a family pet, and it often expects to be the center of attention. Don't plan on leaving this mix home alone for long hours of the day.
